Perhaps this didn't really register the first time around, or not consciously anyway. īut I hadn't realised until I reread it how much To the Lighthouse is a book about summer holidays. For a teenager whose most involved holiday reading experiences had mainly been with Victorian doorstoppers, with their fabulously elaborate plots and detailed chronologies, the sudden death of the central character, Mrs Ramsay, in parentheses in the novel's highly stylised middle section, was deeply strange. "Many novels explore the sliding planes, the archaeology of past, present and future and the still points where the fabric of time is rent and characters slip through. As it happens, there’s been a certain amount of talk about Andre Norton lately, here and elsewhere, and that prompted me to finally turn to the original Witch World novel, and see what I could make of it. Some of the books in the series were always around, as I remember it, in my local libraries and bookstores, but I don’t think I ever read one - if only because I always try to read a series in order, and finding Witch World itself was not always easy. I just couldn't help thinking I was reading a bunch of shallow self-help articles, full of truisms and of dramatic short sentences, that didn't go into enough detail in order to be interesting or helpful. First of all, it's very messy, and although he even mentions in the book that he deliberately wanted to write a messy book, it actually feels like a bunch of blog posts cluttered together in a book, without much structure and flow to it, especially since he repeats himself numerous times throughout it.
